Conde Nast Traveler / Costa Brava for Beginners: Because There’s Always a First Time

Conde Nast Traveler, August 2021.

After lunch, we headed to Pals, perhaps one of the most famous spots on the Costa Brava. The small, charming town was even more vibrant as the downpour made the greenery shine. Among cobbled facades, tiny alleys, vines, and local craft shops, we had an ice cream and walked around. An ideal plan for a summer afternoon.

In the evening, we deviated from the itinerary to visit a lesser-known village, Rupià, just 20 minutes by car from Pals, surrounded by fields and orchards. There, somewhat removed from the world, Judit and Michael have built their paradise. It’s called Doskiwis Brewing, a craft brewery that also serves as a meeting space for anyone wanting to taste their beers. They teamed up with neighbors, Wagyu Empordà, who raise Wagyu cattle fed with Doskiwis’ barley leftovers and cook burgers in a truck attached to the brewery.

Judit, formerly a model in London, and Michael, from New Zealand, chose to live life on their own terms, settling in her hometown. They started their own business and created a space of value for the community using an old furniture warehouse. Watching them work and seeing what they’ve built shows that there’s always another way to do things, and that life can be lived slower. Visiting is a joyful experience, with spectacular burgers—and fries—and a beer you’ve never tried before.
